20 Pair Copper and Fiber cable replacement — High-speed rail station in Malaysia

One 20 Pair Copper and 2 fiber cables (Total 10 Core Multimode) were torn to shreds by strong winds during a thunderstorm

The zebra crossing was supposed to be covered. The whole roof was torn out by strong winds

The fiber cable carries traffic from the Touch-&-Go readers as well as Emergency intercom at the gates to the back-office for processing and communication.

A new fiber and copper cable was laid across the road (parallel to the zebra crossing). Then this new fiber cables were spliced (joined) at both broken ends. The copper cable were joined using a traditional disconnection module tags.

The connection box is then placed out-of-sight into a ceiling manhole

The Splicing of the fiber is done using a Sumitomo Z2C fiber optic splicing machine.

SUMITOMO Z2C is a fast, capable and practical automatic adaptive core fusion splicer. It automatically identifies and splices all fiber types (SMF, MMF, DSF, NZDSF, BIF). Splicing time: 6 seconds, heating time: 15 seconds.

SUMITOMO Z2C is equipped with a high-capacity battery, and is also dust-resistant, water-resistant and shock-proof (drop from 76 cm on 5 faces, excluding top face).

FEATURES

  • Splicing cycle time: 6 sec.
  • Heating cycle time: 15 sec.
  • Automatic fiber identification (SMF, MMF, DSF, NZDSF, BIF, other).
  • Long-life battery for 300 splice&heat cycles.
  • Automatic arc calibration.
  • Dust-resistant, water-resistant and shock-proof.
  • Compact & lightweight (only 1.7 kg).
  • Touch-screen operation.
  • Upgrades software via web.
  • Remote interactive maintenance via web.
  • Equipped with onboard user training video.

All-in-all, it took 2 working days for the new cable to be laid and to be joined back with the old existing cables. Testing was done using an end-to-end laser for Fiber Continuity test for Loss Measurement as well as Optical Power Measurement.
